While the ring is filled with hot action, vivid audiences and heart-stopping moments, the locker room could not be any more contrasting. The sounds of excitement are severely hushed, allowing the gladiators to contemplate their respective fates. A hooded figure is seen seated on a bench in wonder. Before the fans can decipher what famed warrior is under the hood, the individual pulls off his hood, revealing a different sort of hood. The black mask with silver trim of the unknown superstar illuminates off the locker room’s lights, as the newcomer finally makes eye contact with the camera. Setting the tone, the masked man unveils a quick smile, before finally breaking the stillness with his voice…
“Paradise. It’s what people dream of when they wake up, when they eat lunch, and of course right before they sleep the night away. it’s what people dedicate their lives to finding, whether it be in this life or in the afterlife. The elusiveness of this place containing peace, prosperity, and happiness, is what makes me feel so fortunate when I wake up every morning. I don’t have to search endlessly for any such bliss, because I’ve already found it. For me to find my paradise, I don’t have to travel through mazes, or solve puzzles, or anything too intricate. All I have to do is step between a set of ropes, and enter a squared circle.”
The luchador lifts from his seat and steps closer to the camera.
"My name is Serial and I find myself most at peace inside the ring, because those ropes, those turnbuckles, that canvas, and all those roaring fans; it all signifies something greater than me. Growing up as a Mexican-American boy, one of the holiest figures outside of the Bible, was a saint, El Santo to be exact. Seeing men like Santo or Mil or Blue Demon on video tapes, it was like watching real life heroes hidden under radiant masks. Since those days growing up, all I’ve ever wanted to do is be like them and represent my self, my family, my people, and most of all, my culture."
The masked competitor allows his words, his values, to sink in before continuing his commentary.
"I’ve only been competing for a few years, but I’ve entered many different rings, and gone against warriors of all shapes, sizes, and styles. All those glorious victories and lesson-filled defeats, they were just the start. The titles, the tournaments, the masks and scalps I’ve won, they were only the beginning. Everything I’ve experienced, it was all to cultivate me for this day. As the newest member of GHW, I now have the opportunity to face-off against some of the fastest, smartest, strongest and overall finest that this sport has to offer.
Should I be scared? Probably. No one is going to stand across the ring from me to be my friend or show me a good time. They are going to try their best to destroy me and make me reconsider my career choice, but honestly I wouldn’t want it any other way. Nothing in life worth earning comes easy, and I don’t expect GHW to be a walk in the park. While I am anxious to break through the curtains of the Glory and Honor Wrestling and step into this volatile environment, deep down, I don’t know if I’ve ever felt so relaxed.
How can I be so anxious yet so relaxed?
Because to me, this is paradise."
Serial reveals one final smirk before walking off while the camera fades to black.
