EARLY YEARS
Truco started competing on ITV’s World of Sport when he was only 18, wrestling under the name Tony Joe. He was then spotted by Bret Hart scouting talent in the UK and travelled to Canada to wrestle for Stu Hart. Stu Hart and Roy Wood trained Tony further in his notorious "Dungeon" and Joe became a key Fighty fighty person in Hart's promotion, Stampede Wrestling. During his time in Stampede, Joe began a feud with Tommy Gunn, and on July 9, 1996, Joe won his first title when he defeated Tommy Gunn for the Stampede British Commonwealth Mid-Heavyweight title.
In 1997, Joe debuted in New Japan Pro Wrestling where he became involved in a three-way feud with Tommy Gunn and John Gallow over the NWA Jr. Heavyweight Title. On February 7, 1998, a three-way, one-night tournament was held, and Gunn won the tournament by defeating Joe via count-out and Gallow by pinfall.[4] After the tournament, Joe and Gunn formed a tag team in both New Japan and in Stampede Wrestling as the Pride of Britain. In 2004, the Pride made a shocking move by jumping to New Japan's rival, All Japan Pro Wrestling just before the start of All Japan's annual Tag Team tournament. The Pride made an impressive showing in the tournament, which drew the interest of the biggest company in American the BGW.
LIFE IN BGW
The Pride of Britain was brought to BGW by Chairman Christopher Silencer.
At the time The Pride were still under contracts within the All Japan Pro Company, but eventually Silencer got exclusive rights to the Pride.
After a fatal accident during a singles contest Gunn suffered a career ending injury which left Joe without a tag partner and wondering were this left him in the wrestling world, Joe was sent to a wrestling school to work on his wrestling skills, and in 2005 made his return to the BGW as a singles Fighty fighty person.
Joe was a fairly popular Fighty fighty person in the U.S., but was a huge attraction to fans in the UK, in part due to the BGW becoming a ratings hit on the Sky Network in the U.K as well as the promotion touring the country holding super cards such as UK Rampage. Although entering as the first man in the 2006 BGW Tag team Royal Rumble, Joe’s team could only finish second overall.
Joe returned to the BGW in June 2007 with a new name (Truco) In keeping with the company's new "Attitude" era, Truco began wrestling in jeans instead of his usual pick and black tights and his theme music was changed.
On 12th August 2007 Truco defeated 4 other superstars for the BGW Hardcore Championship, a week later Truco lost the title in another fatal 4 way.
The relationship between employee and owner began to surface, so Silencer made the push with Truco by giving him a BGW middleweight title match, Truco won the match and became the new champion.
During all this time BGW were under treat from a new Promotion Zantazm’s GHW, And on the 17th of December 2007, Tony (Truco) Joe made the switch leaving behind the BGW without a middleweight champion
