Michael Lansberg: Welcomg back to Off the Record, we have a great panel here today. First, to my left, we have one half of the GHW tag team Champions and the reigning Charging Glory Champion, Gnarfflinger the Butcher
GtB: Glad to be here, Michael.
ML: And next to him, Former NHL Coach and CBC Hockey Analyst, Don Cherry.
DC: Great to be here.
ML: To my Right, Former Baywatch Star, Pamela Anderson
PA: Thank you, Michael.
ML: Thank you for being our guest. And last but not least, a regular here on OTR, Frank D'Angelo, owner of Steelback breweries.
FD: A pleasure as always...
ML: Big story coming out of the first round of the NHL Playoffs, New York Islanders defenceman Sean Hill suspended for the first 20 games of next season for violating the league's banned substance policy. What this long enough?
DC: First off, nobody's talking about what he took. Was it a Stimulant to give him extra energy, steroids to get stronger, or this blood doping stuff that really goes teh extra mile for an unfair advantage? Let's look at what he took, then decide. The League did this, but isn't releasing that information.
FD: If this is a first offence, 20 games, a quarter of the season, with corresponding pay loss fits for a warning that the league doesn't want the integrity of the game sullied like has happenned to Baseball with Mark MacGuire, Raphael Palmero and Barry Bonds.
PA: Is it just integrity or is there a larger risk to the health of the player in question. Wouldn't a longer suspension be a louder message that we don't like this behaviour?
GtB: Ma'am, you hit it right on the head. I don't know too many guys in GHW that are juicing, because most of us know guys that took that short cut, got bigger, stronger and faster, but it cost them their carreers, and perhaps even their lives. I fought a guy that everyone knew was juicing, and in the match, I worked his knee, to soften it up for a figure four. At one point he blew a spot and shattered his knee. The doctor said his knee could no longer take the abuse that the action in the ring and it gave out. He lost his leg as a result.
ML: But how common are these substances in sports?
DC: You get the occasional guy that took the wrong cough syrop or something, that's why Cold FX is so popular among NHL guys. It's been designed to prevent cough and cold without using anything that WADA would disapprove of.
GtB: Grapes has a point. I also remember Jose Theodore tripped a test by taking Propecia, for hair loss. GHW has a crack team of medical professionals that looks at the various medications and dietary suppliments to make sure that nothing dangerous or otherwise inappropriate is involved. GHW works with us to get the most out of our bodies without crossing that line.
FD: But what about power sports? Wouldn't they be in a position to benefit more from these substances?
PA: And it's not just Athletes. Some guys in positions where size and strength is imperative have been known to pop a few pills. I've seen bodyguards to Celebrities get busted for this.
GtB: Frank, The human body handles mass gain best when it's gradual. I have gained 75 pounds over a 15 year carreer, and my knees and ankles have held up. The Excercise that I did over those years strengthened those joints. But you get a guy that gains 15 to 20 pounds over a year, his knees won't handle it. And worse, the ones that are foreign chemicals will burn out the Liver or Kidneys in real short order. In short, I don't think any sport is immune to doping but it's not as rampant as WADA makes it sound...
FD: I have an Idea. Have a WADA rep with the athlete accused. Have the athlete fill three sample cups and place a cold Steel back beer on the table. Test the a and b samples, if they are ditry, the player has to drink the third sample while the WADA rep drinks the STeelback to celebrate a job well done. If it's clean, the WADA repdrinks the third sample while the player drinks the Steelback as a reward for their integrity...
ML: Thanks for that Frank. We have to go to a commercial, but before we go, we have an e-mail question for you Grapes: Are you drinking Steelback tonight with Frank or will you be sticking with Canadian...
FD: The Steelback is on me tonight!
OOC: Look for part three tomorrow with the panel again, and part four Saturday nigth where I'm back for Next Question...
