Monday Night Combat (1/5/09): Wringing in the New Year
LIEUTENANT
1. Ultimate Gene v. Essa Rios (Single-docs)
Winner: Essa Rios by default
Notes: Ultimate Gene will electrify the fans to start off Combat when he takes on Essa Rios. Both Fighty fighty persons are still awaiting their shot in The Champions Tournament, and they can get themselves ready with a big win tonight.
2. Non-Title Handicap Match
Eric The Torture v. Height of Impact (docs)
Winner: Eric The Torture
Notes: Eric's agent Johnny Detroit requested and I granted this handicap match tonight on Combat. The only catch is that it won't be a Title match, but rather a qualifying Title match for Eric. If Eric can pull off the upset, he'll have himself a ticket to Winter Fury. If he loses, he has a long conversation with Johnny Detroit on his plate.
3. The Champions Tournament
trickshot v. YOUNG GANGSTA (Ladder-docs)
Winner: trickshot
Notes: trickshot and newly promoted YOUNG GANGSTA will fight tonight for the #1 contendership in the Lieutenant Division. One of these two will face the freshly crowned Lieutenant Champion The Master this Friday on Mayhem.
CAPTAIN
1. The Ultimate Kid v. Lunchtime Legend (Single-docs)
Winner: Lunchtime Legend
Notes: The Ultimate Kid was eliminated from the Gauntlet already, but he's got his fingers crossed that the fans will vote him back in. Meanwhile, Lunchtime Legend needs to get things clicking again if he's going to be able to be a force when he enters the Gauntlet.
2. Non-Title Match
Samoa Machine v. Marcus Airbourne (Table-docs)
Winner: Marcus Airbourne
Notes: Samoa Machine loves a good fight, and he'll get one when he faces Marcus Airbourne in a table match tonight. Marcus was able to defeat Captain X-Force Champion Tommy Musashi last week, and now he looks to make it two in a row against the best in his Division.
3. Escaping the Gauntlet
HaydenHardKore v. Tito Ortiz (Single-docs)
Winner: Tito Ortiz by default
Notes: The Grammar Fairy is dazzling the fans as he's 2 for 2 in the Gauntlet thus far. His next opponent is newly promoted and ex-Lieutenant Champion, Tito Ortiz. Can Tito come out blazing in his debut in the Captain Division?
COLONEL
1. Luther v. RJ Wild (Single-docs)
Winner: Luther
Notes: Luther is still waiting to enter the Gauntlet, and in the meantime, will duke it out in a classic one-on-one with RJ. RJ just lost to HawkEye in the Gauntlet and he particularly needs to get things going if he's going to ever rise in the ranks in the Colonel Division.
2. Escaping the Gauntlet
HawkEye v. Malcriado Beast (Cage-docs)
Winner: Malcriado Beast
Notes: HawkEye has looked good so far in the Gauntlet, but tonight a beast faces him, and it's no average beast....it's Malcriado Beast. MB and Hawk will be locked inside a cage, and if MB can't capitalize, then Hawk will for sure be tired when he faces his next opponent.
GENERAL
1. Last Laugh Tournament
frog man v. Black Dead (Table-docs)
Winner: Black Dead
Notes: frog man won his first round match against StrikerLT, but then he got stuck in a Last Laugh match against CHARISMATIC HARDY. He was victorious in that match as well, so he earned his rightful place in round 2. His opponent will be Black Dead, who managed to defeat Pennylane to advance. Let's get some tables set up.
2. Last Laugh Tournament
Angelus v. Muhammad Hassan (Cage-docs)
Winner: Muhammad Hassan
Notes: Jake Steele got a little bit of luck when his opponent didn't show up for his first round match. Then, he got a bit of bad luck when he was chosen to fight in a Last Laugh match against Gnarfflinger. He managed to defeat Gnarff though, so now he finds himself in round two inside a steel cage with Angelus.
3. Last Laugh Tournament
Backyard Brawler 2 v. Psycho Savage (Single-docs)
Winner: Psycho Savage
Notes: Both BB2 and Psycho Savage did not have to go through a Last Laugh match after each of them defeated their opponents in round 1. That doesn't mean that the winner of this match will be so lucky though. This will be a an interesting struggle between two very strong adversaries.
4. Last Laugh Tournament
Pennylane v. Falling Angel (Ladder-docs)
Winner: Pennylane
Notes: In the last round 2 match of the night, Pennylane will face Falling Angel in a ladder match. Pennylane was the only Superstar so far in the Tournament to have lost his first round match but won his Last Laugh opportunity. He looks to put that loss in his past and capitalize. Falling Angel won her first round match and Last Laugh match and looks to be poised for big things soon.
5. Money in the Bank Qualifier
StrikerLT v. I Always Lose (Table-docs)
Winner: StrikerLT by default
Notes: StrikerLT and IAL couldn't handle the Last Laugh Tournament, but now they each get a shot at entering the Money in the Bank Rumble at Winter Fury. Whoever ends up slamming his opponent through a table will be one step closer to winning a future Title shot.
TAG TEAM
1. Gold Tag Team Tournament Match
Lost Cause v. Elitist Club (docs)
Winner: Elitist Club
Notes: Elitist Club earned a BYE in their first match in the Gold Tag Team Tournament, and you could say that Lost Cause did the same as their opponents did not show up for their match. Now, two of the best teams collide to see who makes it to the #1 contender match next week.
2. Gold Tag Team Tournament Match
Catastrophic Duo v. ReVamped (docs)
Winner: Catastrophic Duo
Notes: Catastrophic Duo defeated Guerreros de la Calle last week on Combat to earn themselves a spot in this semi-final tag match. ReVamped were lucky enough to get to the second round after a win by default. Which team is going to work harder than the other to advance to next week's final match?
